My great-greatgrandparents Johann Lehmkuhl, owner of a “Restaurant & Bierhalle" in Bremen and Margaretha Erdbrink

Johann Lehmkuhl was born in Oetzen (near Bremen, Germany) on 20 June 1847, he was a son of Carsten Lehmkuhl and Catherine Lehmkuhl-Emigholz. One day, he moved to Bremen, where he would live for the rest of his life

He married Margaretha Elisabeth Erdbrink (1842-1877), the daughter of Friedrich Wilhelm Erdbrink (1797-1873) and Anna Margaretha Erdbrink-Schierbeck (1883-1883)

From this marriage the following children were born:
  1. Carl Friedrich Wilhelm (1874-1952); my great-grandfather
  2. Wilhelm Friedrich Lehmkuhl (1876-1959)

His wife died in 1877, while his children were still very young. He remarried in 1886 in Bremen with Sophie Dorothea Dohrmann (1862-1941)

From this marriage the following children were born:
  1. Wilhelmina Catharina Abildgaard-Lehmkuhl; (1887-1955)
  2. Christian Friedrich Lehmkuhl (1889-1914)
  3. Meta-Frieda Murtfeld Lehmkuhl (1891-1926)
  4. son Lehmkuhl (1893-)

My grandmother Rose Hugenholtz-Lehmkuhl (1905-1992) once told me that Friedrich (1889-1914) was her favorite uncle. I remember a conversation with her: “he helped her to trace the easter eggs that were difficult to find (in the clock)”. He was killed at the Battle of Tannenberg in a fight at Dröbnitz (former East Prussia), in the first weeks after the outbreak of WW1. When he was killed the family wore black crapes for a long time.
Johann Lehmkuhl had a "Restaurant & Bierhalle" at the Werderstraße 22 in Bremen (see photo). The area is heavily bombed on January 3, 1941. The building no longer exists.
Johann Lehmkuhl died in Bremen in 1916 at the age of 68. He was buried in Bremen with his first wife in "Friedhof Walle". His second wife, Sophie Dohrmann, was buried there in 1941.

Zijn echtgenote overleed in 1877, toen zijn kinderen nog heel klein waren. Hij hertrouwde in 1886 in Bremen met Sophie Dorothea Dohrmann (1862-1941)

Uit dit huwelijk werden de volgende kinderen geboren:

  2. Christian Friedrich Lehmkuhl (1889-1914)
  3. Meta Frieda Murtfeld-Lehmkuhl (1891-1926)

Mijn oma Rose Hugenholtz-Lehmkuhl (1905-1992) heeft mij ooit verteld dat Friedrich (1889-1914) haar favoriete oom was. Er staat mij iets bij dat ze hem hielp om ook de moeilijk vindbare paaseieren op te sporen (in de klok). Hij is gesneuveld tijdens de Slag bij Tannenberg in een gevecht bij Dröbnitz (voormalig Oost-Pruisen), in de eerste weken na het uitbreken van WOI. Toen zijn dood bekend werd heeft de familie heel lang zwarte rouwbanden gedragen. Hij was reservist bij het "Reserve infanterie regiment nr.2, Stralsund. Ie bataljon, 3e compagnie."
Johann Lehmkuhl had een “Restaurant & Bierhalle” aan de Werderstraße 22 in Bremen (zie foto). Het gebied is tijdens een bombardement op 3 januari 1941 zwaar gebombardeerd. Het pand bestaat niet meer.

Johann Lehmkuhl is in 1916 op 68 jarige leeftijd overleden in Bremen. Hij is begraven in Bremen bij zijn eerste echtgenote in "Friedhof Walle". Zijn tweede echtgenote, Sophie Dohrmann, is in 1941 bijgezet.
